'Sea Gem' Necklaces

Here’s a sneak peek at one of my new ranges of Jewellery!

I’ve been collecting ‘Sea Gems’ from a very young age. I’ve always been fascinated by the smooth forms created by the elements, especially as smashed glass and ceramic is often seen as,
at best unsightly and at worst, dangerous.

These pieces have all been collected from the Great British East Coast by my own little hands.

I hope you’ll agree they truly deserve the title of ‘Gems’.

The most fruitful time of year

It’s EASTER!
Each Easter I scour the shop shelves, to source unusual colours and patterns of egg wrappers.
Each Easter I pester my nearest and dearest into saving wrappers for me.
Each Easter I carefully unwrap egg after egg trying desperately not to tear the foil.
Each Easter I handout unwrapped eggs to anyone standing within a 500m radius of me as I don’t actually like the chocolate!

I do like the cute little bunnys though.

Easter is a celebration of rebirth. It symbolises new beginnings. When better to shake the cobwebs off my creativity and work on a new range?

The egg I’ve chosen has a nice turquoise polka dot pattern with a pinkie silver bottom and purple trim. I want to turn it into a large necklace…but it needs a bit of work first!

I carefully unwrap it then decide what sections of the foil will make a pleasing pattern.
Then I laminate the foil in acrylic plastic. The pieces are laminating as I write this.
Fingers and toes crossed. I’ll post the results later! Kx

Cup n' Ring Marks

I've been intrigued with Cup n' Ring Marks since finding a guide book of Prehistoric Rock Motifs of Northumberland, in 1998.

The marks became a large influence in my work during my Applied Arts degree and they still hold fascination today.

My 'Final Pieces' for my degree show consisted of a range of silver and acrylic rings laminated with hand painted papers, metals and precious gem stones such as emeralds, rubys and diamonds.

I am shocked by the crudeness of these rings. I hope this is a sign of progress rather than disillusion! However, I still like the concept of them and plan to develop this idea into more visually pleasing pieces......soon : )

Butterflies

I have been drawn to butterflies since a very young age, looking through the glass display cabinets in the local museum at the beautiful, rare and foreign breeds or visiting the near by ‘Butterfly World’. A million miles away from the Cabbage White butterflies that flitted through my own garden.

The butterfly is a powerful symbol for transformation. From mundane beginnings it’s reborn radiating colour and light.

The jewellery and collectibles industry have prized butterflies wings for many decades, for the iridescent colours they bring when encapsulated in glass pendants and pins.

These pieces intrigued me and I wished to draw inspiration from them, creating jewellery utilising every day, disposable materials and transforming them into pieces that radiated colour.

Some examples of my initial attempts are bellow.

I am planing to develop these ideas further….

What's this all about?

Having recently moved house, I am overwhelmed by the amount to sketch books, cuttings, magazines, trimmings and general inspiration I have collected over the years and the amount of space it takes up in my life and shelves.

In true new beginning style, I have started to condense my belongings and chuck out the chintz in an attempt to streamline my life.

Not being one to go cold turkey or deny my magpie urges, I decided to continue my kleptomaniac ways, here, online, for all to see. I hope you enjoy, Kim.
